IRS Will Use a Navient Subsidiary to Go After Your Back Taxes

The Internal Revenue Service on Monday named four private contractors to implement a private debt collection program, including one owned by student-loan servicer Navient, which has faced scrutiny from Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) following a settlement with the Justice Department in 2014 for alleged improper loan practices.

Pioneer, in Horseheads, N.Y., is one of the four companies that will work on accounts owing debts that the IRS is no longer actively addressing, either due to lack of resources or because the accounts are old with overdue debts, the agency said today, adding that it will notify taxpayers with such accounts informing them that their debts are being transferred to a private collector.
