Many are shifting strategy to protect gains made under Obama
Over the past few years a bevy of organizations have been building momentum to help borrowers cope with the $1.3 trillion in student debt in the U.S. and to make college more affordable.
They’ve pushed for large attention-grabbing reforms, like debt-free college and an easier path to student loan forgiveness for defrauded students, and for subtler tweaks to the student loan system, such as changes to the government contracts with companies that manage the student loan repayment process to encourage them to work in borrowers’ best interests.
